Brief Outline: Students write a short diary entry about what they did on a selected day. Two sentences are true, while one sentence is false. Their classmates must guess which sentence is a lie.

Materials Needed:

Detailed Explanation:

  1. After handing each student a worksheet, have them write three sentences about what they did on a given day at the bottom of their worksheet. One of the sentences should be false.
  2. Then, have each student stand up and read their diary entry.
  3. Students make a guess as to which sentence is false and make a wager on their betting sheet.
  4. Have the student who read their diary say which sentence is false. Students who guessed correctly gain their wager, and those who guessed incorrectly lose their wager.
  5. Move to the next student and repeat.
  6. The student with the most money at the end of the activity wins.

Variations:

  • If the class is a larger class, you can have students volunteer to read their diary entries. That way you can make the activity last as long as you need it to.
  • You could also make it a class betting game, where the class votes on which sentence is false. The sentence with the most votes as false is the class's bet.

Teaching Suggestions:

  • Try to make sure it was a day where they most likely wouldn't have been all doing something together as a class.
