Brief Outline: Make a front page to a newspaper.

Materials Needed:

  • MakeANewspaper worksheets: There are three - article, article titles and newspaper names.
  • Dictionaries
  • Scissors

Detailed Explanation:

  1. For the first class hand out the article writing worksheet. The exercise is the same as pages 18-19 in New Horizon's grade 3 textbook. If the students have recently gotten back from a school trip, they should write about the trip. If nothing special had happened, pick a certain weekend they should write about.
  2. Give the students the whole period to write their articles. Make sure they have dictionaries to use.
  3. For the second class, give the students time to finish what they have not finished from the first class.
  4. Hand out the worksheet on article titles. There is a small matching activity on article titles. Review the answers and get the students to make titles on their articles.
  5. The last worksheet has examples on newspaper names. Review possible titles with the students.
  6. For the final class, do the lay out of the paper.

Teaching Suggestions:

  • Make sure the English teacher has done page 18-19 in the New Horizon's grade 3 textbook.
  • Put time limits on the activities or it could take forever.
  • This activity was designed for the New Horizon series but could easily be adapted to fit any English textbook.
