Optical Illusions

Materials Needed:

• OpticalIllusions handout: The first 2-picture illusion on page one of the handout is to be used as the example picture to demonstrate with the JTE.

Detailed Explanation:

1. Display the face-musician poster on the chalkboard, asking the students "What's this?"  Students will probably say "It's a face."
2. One teacher says, "I agree, I think it's a face."  The other teacher says, "I disagree, I think it's a man playing music."  Show the students where the musician's nose, feet and saxophone are.
3. Hand out the eight types of illusions at random.
4. Students walk around, find a partner and question each other:
   • A: Shows his illusion to student B and asks, "What`s this?"
   • B: "I think it's a ~."
   • A: Marks student B's choice in the table below the picture and responds, "I agree" or "I disagree" depending on what they see.
5. A and B reverse roles and do the dialogue again.
6. Students find new partners and repeat.

Variations:

• "I think so, too." and "I don't think so." can be used.
