Brief Outline: Students interview each other to fill-in-the-blanks on their weather map.

 

Materials Needed:

  • PastWeather worksheet: Cut up the weather cards before class.

 

Detailed Explanation:

  1. After giving the students the map, have them fill-in the 'Weather Key' with various weather: rainy, cloudy and sunny.
  2. Review the country names and dialogue.
    • Countries: Australia, Brazil, France, India, Japan, New Zealand, Russia, South Africa and United States.
    • Dialogue:
      • "Where were you yesterday?"
      • "I was in <country name>."
      • "Was it <weather>?"
      • "Yes, it was." or "No, it was not."
  3. Each student then receives a map and a secret card with a country's name and weather on it. The student writes the information in the 'Your Card' section of their worksheet and hands back the card to the teacher.
  4. Once all cards are handed back, students move around the classroom engaging in the dialogue above.
  5. If Student A receives a 'yes' answer from Student B, they write Student B's name in the box by the country and the weather symbol. Hawaii has already been filled in as an example on the worksheet.

 

Variations:

  • The grammar could be changed to use this activity for any verb tense, especially the future tense 'Weather Report' activity on page 47 of New Horizon's grade 2 textbook, but you'll need to change the worksheet to take into account the verb tense change. 

 

Teaching Suggestions:

  • Be sure to practice the names of the countries, the dialogue and the weather to ensure a smooth activity.

  • (Apr 28, 2011) Paul said: Great game, easy to understand and do....However the worksheet is not editable and the word "name" in the boxes are difficult to read. I ended up whiting them out and hand drawing a bit larger box and reprinted the country names as well with arrows to the corresponding countries.
