Brief Outline: A listening and speaking telephone number activity.

 

Materials Needed:

 

Detailed Explanation:

  1. Print out the worksheet and cut the cards out. Give one to each student The Big number (in bold, on top) is their own number and the lower smaller number is the next number.
  2. Teach/revise numbers etc, "My phone number is ......" and then teach "the next number is ....." Tell the students to listen very carefully, when they hear their phone number they stand up and say "My phone number is ....... (and read it out their number )" and then they say "the next number is .... (and read that out)".
  3. You could start yourself or choose a student to start.

 

Teaching Suggestions:

  • There is enough cards for 24 students so if you have more (or less) students you will need to adjust the worksheet accordingly.

I am curious, have you ever tried to set up the activity so the students are trying to make pairs or groups? In other words the numbers come in pairs or sets and the students would have to walk around, introduce themselves and give out their phone number to find the person who has phone number they are looking for.

    I did a variation to this activity that my JTE suggested. Instead of having them say My Number is and "The next number is", They would only listen to the next number. For example, I would start things off by reading the first phone number. That student would stand up and read the number of the following person. When the following person heard their number, they stood up and read the number of the following person.
    Another variation is instead of having them read single digits, have them read doubles. For example, instead of 5-9-3-4-2-1-2-3 they would say 59-34-21-23.
