  Polite Questions

Submitted by: Maggie Li     Borrowed or inspired from: N/A     Date added: 09-11-08     Edited by: まだ

Brief Outline:  Students try to find the other person in the class who is holding the same card as they are by using polite questions.

Materials Needed

  • PoliteQuestions worksheet - print 2 copies, laminate them, and cut out each square.

Detailed Explanation:

  1. Each student is given a card.  Make sure that two students are given the same card so that they will be able to find their pair later on.
  2. Students walk around and attempt to find their partner by asking "Would you like to...?" along with what's shown on their cards. For example, a student holding a "play tennis with me?" card should go around, asking other students, "Would you like to play tennis with me?".
  3. To determine who to initiate the question, students can simply play 'janken', decide on either the winner or loser ask the "Would you like..." question.
  4. The student who is being asked should respond by saying "Yes, I'd love to." if he/she is holding the corresponding card. Else, he/she should say, "No, I can't. I am busy", "I would love to, but I can't" or any no responses with a reason.
  5. Shuffle the cards and repeat #1-#4

Variations:

  • You can make the game into a competition by printing 3 or 4 cards of the same action. Students will compete to be the first in finding all two or three others holding the same card and then sit down!

Teaching Suggestions:

  • Make sure that each student will be able to find his/her pair. If you got an odd # class, have the JTE or yourself participate.
