Brief Outline: Students learn the grammar point 'want to...' and 24 common occupations.

 

Materials Needed:

  • PowerPointOccupations worksheets:
  • Projector, Computer, Microsoft's PowerPoint, Extention Cord and Screen

 

Detailed Explanation:

  1. Explain "want to be" with your JTE using the PowerPoint slides. Call on students individually by name to translate the 10 or so Japanese sentences using 'want to be'. This gives a great opperitunity for you and your JTE to do teamwork. It is likely that after teaching this lesson 6 times that you will also understand the grammar point in Japanese. Briefly, explain the 'I want to be a...' pattern.
  2. Pass out the occupations worksheet. Explain to the students that they are to write the Japanese meaning for each occupation as it comes up in the presentation.
  3. Go through each occupation having the class repeat the name after you.
  4. Teach the 'I want to be a...' pattern again and instruct your students to fill in the blanks at the bottom of their worksheet: "My name is _________. I want to be a _______." If they don't know what they want to be, they should circle "I don't know what I want to be."
  5. Have each student stand up and read their sentences aloud. If you don't have enough time call out random student numbers.

 

Tips/Cautions:

  • This is not a game. This is a serious lesson that is designed to teach a lot of material in a short time. It may not be suitable for your students if they are told that you will always do a game.
