Detailed Explanation:

1. After divide the class into teams, explain to them that if they are in a foriegn country or speaking to a foriegner and they don't know a specific vocabulary word, they should try to use gestures.  Also, explain to them that they should try to give English hints along with gestures to get the point across.  Run through a couple of examples with the students: kotatsu (Japanese heated table), hashioki (holder for chopsticks), etc.
2. Set up the situation.  Tell the students they are shop employees in a foriegn country. You are a Japanese girl or boy. Walk out of the classroom and walk back in. Encourage the students to say, `Good afternoon, can I help you.` Respond by saying, "Hello, do you have ...ah... nani... ah..." while doing a gesture.
3. When a student guesses the object give their team a point.
4. RANDOMLY choose a student to go next.  It is important to choose a student at random. If you make the student who had the right answer go, no one will want to guess the charade.

Variations:

• Don`t do gestures. Do English hints, for example, a scarf: "It is long... It is warm..."

Teaching Suggestions:

• This activity is meant to suppliment New Horizion's grade 3 gesture page (pg. 44), but it can actually be used with any gesture-type activity.
