Brief Outline: Students practice the present progressive (~ing) while having fun testing out their art skills.

 

Detailed Explanation:

  1. After splitting the class into pairs or groups, the first person in the pair/group has 10 seconds to draw a picture of an action.  The student is not to let anyone see it until the 10 seconds has finished counting down.  For actions include:

  2. As you can see, you don't have to be good at drawing.  Another option is to use a set of action cards instead of having the students drawing
  3. Once the time has expired, the drawer shows the group/partner and they must form a question: Is he sitting?  Based upon whether the question is correct or not, the drawer answers, "Yes, (s)he is." or "No, (s)he is not."  If the answer is 'No', have the pair partner/group keep guessing until (s)he/they guess the correct action.
  4. Then, switch students and repeat.
  5. Once the students start getting the hang of the game, make the game harder.  Try giving students sentences they have to draw.  For example:
    • I am watching TV in the living room.
    • She is having a shower in the bathroom.
    • We are eating sandwiches in the kitchen.
    • She is writing a letter in the bedroom.
    • We are making tea in the kitchen.
    • They are cleaning their teeth in the bathroom.
    • I am listening to music in the bedroom.
    • He is studying in the bedroom.
    • They are playing table tennis in the living room.
    • He is washing dishes in the kitchen.

 

Variations:

  • Instead of the students drawing or using a set of action cards, try cutting action pictures out of newspapers, magazines, etc.
  • To have the students practice 'they', instruct the students to occasionally draw two people into their sketches.
