Brief Outline: This is a telephone-style type of game where students whisper down the rows until the information reaches the last student in the row, at which time everything turns explosive!

 

Materials Needed:

  • Balloons with a time card in them

 

Detailed Explanation:

  1. Place the teams into linear lines. Their regular classroom set up should be fine.
  2. Take the students in the front row of desks out side.
  3. Tell these students the what time it will be.
  4. They race back into the room and the telephone game begins.
  5. Once the vocabulary or dialogue hits the end of the room. The last student comes on the team. ( the end of the telephone line rushes to the front to draw arms on the blank clocks. I use magnetic clock arms, saves time. Write down the order the teams finish. Don’t correct them if they are wrong.
  6. The first person to had tried to put the time down gets to pop the balloon that has the answer in it. He or she then tells the group who has the right time.
  7. The team that had the right time and finished first gets the point.
  8. The point is awarded to the team that finished first with the right time. Go again.

 

Variations:

  • The student who gets the time right gets to pop the balloon. Points instead of the anwer.

 

Teaching Suggestions:

  • Colour code the balloons so you know which one to pop.
  • Don`t fill the ballons up the all the way.  A garbage bag should be able to hold at least six rounds.

I usually evaluate all the teams` answers and give points for all correct answers, and an extra point for the fastest team. This game also works for weather, and would probably work for a number of other subjects. Thanks for the game, Brent.
