Brief Outline: Students look at a map of the U.S. and calculate times across various time zones.
Materials Needed:
Detailed Explanation:
Explain time zones to the students. They are probably not aware time zones even exist. For example, if it is 10:00 A.M. in Hokkaido & in Niigata & in Okinawa. However, there are time zones in America. If it is 6:00 P.M. in Virginia, it is 5:00 P.M. in Texas, 4:00 P.M. in Colorado, and 3:00 P.M. in California.
Pass out the worksheet and have the students calculate for the given times. You may need to hint at phrasing the answer.
As a bonus question, I have the students calculate the time difference between my home in Virginia and Japan. I give the students one example: "It is 10:00 A.M. in Japan on January 22. It is 8:00 P.M. in America on January 21. There is a 14 hour difference. Now, what if it is 8:00 A.M. in Japan? What time is it in America?"
