Brief Outline: Students unscramble a set of words and then use those words to play a simplified game of famous board game, Scrabble.

Materials Needed:

Detailed Explanation:

  1. Hand out worksheet that contains the scrambled words.  The students must 'unmix' the vocabulary words.
  2. Go over the answers with the students.
  3. Divide the class into groups.
  4. Give each group an Unmix Scrabble board game and each student a scorecard.
  5. The students take turns writing words on the board game starting from the middle star.
  6. If the word passes through a number the student gets those points.
  7. At the end of the game have the students tally up their points and the winner is the student with the highest points.

Variations:

  • Allow students to use words outside their target vocabulary list.

Teaching Suggestions:

  • This game can be used for any vocabulary by easily adjusting the scrambled words worksheet accordingly.

Checking answers together and going around talking with the groups while they played was good listening practice. Also got them thinking about the spelling of different words.
