Brief Outline: This activity is a report and write game about finding Waldo.

Materials Needed:

  • Waldo handouts: There are two - map and worksheet

Detailed Explanation:

  1. Hang a couple copies of the Waldo map around the classroom.
  2. Divide the class into teams and hand out a worksheet to each team.
  3. One student should be assigned the writing job.
  4. One student from each group should go up to the picture and think of a preposional sentence using the information from the picture. When they think of one they return to the group and report the sentence to the writer. Once the sentence is recorded the next student goes. Repeat until the team has written ten sentences.
  5. The teams must use all the prepositions on their worksheet at least once. They also have to use "There is" or "There are" at least once.
  6. The goal is to be the first team to finish.

Variations:

  • Instead of making it a who-can-finish-fastest activity, give a set period of time.  For example, have the teams race to see who can make the most sentences in ten minutes.
  • Instead of making it a team game, this activity can be done individually or in pairs. Make a copy of the worksheet for each student or pair.

Teaching Suggestions:

  • Dictionaries are greatly encouraged.

Tips/Cautions:

  • Make sure the same student is not doing all the work.
