Brief Outline: Students circle their own answers, and then try to find students with the same answer

Materials Needed:

  • WhichIsMoreInteresting attachments: Sara's (original) / Paul's (this version only has "more..." types of sentences)

Detailed Explanation:

  1. After giving each student a copy of the handout, practice reading through each question, making sure students understand them.
  2. Have the students circle their own answer.
  3. Then, demonstrate the activity with the JTE/ALT.
  4. Two students janken. The winner chooses the question, and asks the loser a comparison question: "Which is more interesting, watching dramas or watching anime?"
  5. The loser responds and then asks the winner, "How about you?"
  6. If the winner has the same answer, they reply, "Me, too." and they sign each other's papers. If the winner has a different answer, they reply "For me, ..."
  7. Students then find a new partner and play again.
  8. Winners are the students who to get nine squares filled-in.

Variations:

  • For a shorter version, stop the activity once the first student gets a bingo or nine squares filled-in.

Tips/Cautions:

  • Some students will just hand over their papers without using English. Establish a penalty for anyone caught doing this. For example, they must sing an English song or do a demonstration with the JTE/ALT.

I played so only the janken winner could write their friends name down. It gave it a little more competition. The winner was the student who either completed the sheet (i.e. is good at janken) or at the end the student with the most signatures. Also I took out the 'for me' bit. It made the sentence really long.
i.e. Which is more interesting, watching drama or watching anime. Watching drama is more interesting than watching anime. How about you? Me too/ Watching anime is more interesting than watching dramas.
