Brief Outline: Students ask yes/no questions to decide what type of person their friends are.

Materials Needed:

Detailed Explanation:

  1. After drawing a pyramid flow chart on the board, as a demonstration, ask the JTE questions using the flow chart, working downward based upon the responses.
  2. Then, hand out the worksheet and give the students a couple minutes to fill-in-the-blanks with questions.  As the students are writing, walk around the class and note the best questions being written.  When the class is almost done, write up some of the best questions on the board to help the slower students.
  3. Have the students stand up, find a partner and play Janken. The winner asks the questions and the loser must answer. The winner says, "You are (final box)."  The loser signs their name at the bottom of the winner's worksheet.
  4. Then, the students go find another partner, rinse and repeat.
  5. At the end of class, the students with the most names are rewarded with an applause and/or stickers.

Variations:

  • Make sure the students know all the grammar points that are on the worksheet.
  • You can add/subtract questions on the worksheet to increase/decrease the difficulty.

Teaching Suggestions:

  • If you draw the example pyramid before class, it will save you a little time.
  • As for the small class sizes, there are no changes needed. This activity works well with as few as four students.
