Brief Outline: Students try to think of as many countries as possible within 5-10 minutes.

Detailed Explanation:

  1. Divide the class into groups of 5 or 6 students. Students are allowed one dictionary per group.
  2. One at a time, students from each group go up and try to correctly place as many countries as possible within a world map (not provided) on the chalkboard. They can use their dictionaries to figure out how to spell a country's name but no dictionaries are allowed at the board, instead other group members can call out the spelling to whichever teammate is currently at the board. The countries do not have to be drawn perfectly but have to be as accurately placed as possible.
  3. At the end of the games award two points for correct spelling and one point for incorrect spelling. How strict you want to be about placement is up to you. The team with the most points is the winner.

Variations:

  • You could try continents instead of the world. But that would be more challenging for the kids and they may be less spontaneous than if they had no restrictions.

Teaching Suggestions:

  • Give each group a different starting point. Asia for one, Africa for another, S or N America for the others. It may minimise copying, although I've found that they're so absorbed in trying to get placement and spelling right that they often don't bother copying from other teams.
