Picture Shiritori

Brief Outline:  Students compete in an exciting row race to see which row can create the most pictures with their matching words in 5-10 minutes.

Materials Needed:

  • Chalkboard and chalk

Detailed Explanation:

  1. In the usual English shiritori, students take the last letter of the word before and create a new word with that letter. With picture shiritori they have to draw the picture and write the word beneath the picture.

Variations:

  • Students draw pictures only and use no words. They are not allowed to ask their team mates what the picture represents and have to guess what letter the word ends with.

Teaching Suggestions:

  • The ALT and/or JTE draws the first picture for each row on the board, ensuring that every word ends with a different letter, this prevents students from simply stealing the another row's ideas. When counting up the scores at the end of the game, it is best to award two points for correct spelling of a word and picture combination. If the word is spelled incorrectly, award one point for the picture only.
