Brief Outline: Students learn the concept of 'Trick or Treat' and some general information about Halloween while practicing new vocabulary.
Materials Needed:
- Slips of paper & a bag - on various slips of paper (as many as you have students), write out various action commands to serve as your 'Tricks', ideally drawing upon new vocabulary: "Jump on one foot," "Ride a bike," "Read a book," "Play tennis." Also, add a few 'Treats' in as well: "Get a sticker" "Choose a friend, and have them 'ride a bike'.", etc. Fold the slips up and place them in your bag to take with you to class.
- Prizes - stickers, stamps, candy (make sure you ask your school before you bring candy)
Detailed Explanation:
After example what 'Trick/Treat' means, approach a student and have them say, "Trick or Treat". Then, they can reach into the bag and pull out one slip of paper.
If it's a 'Trick', the student must perform the action listed on the paper, until the end of the game. If it's a 'Treat', they take their ticket to the JTE to receive their prize and return to their seat.
- That the whole game! Pretty simple really, but it can be as silly as what you write on the slips of paper. It gets progressively more and more silly as you work your way through the classroom.
Variations:
- You can begin the class with a brief explanation of Halloween and what the words 'Trick or Treat' mean. Vary the explanation length to add/subtract time.
Teaching Suggestions:
- Some other tricks:
- "Wear these eyebrows," or "Wear this mustache." Before class, make some paper eyebrows and mustaches and use tape to affix them to their faces for maximum hilarity.
- "Put your hands on your head."
- "Play (sport)."
- "Swim around the class."
- "Say 'hello' to everyone."
- "Introduce yourself to everyone."
- "Tell everyone 'I love you.'" (One person at a time until the game ends).
- "Dance."
Tips/Cautions:
- Some kids can get super embarrassed. If you know who they are try to make sure they do not go first or towards the beginning. Skip around to your loud-mouth kids first, they will appreciate the attention and it will get the game flowing. By the time you get to the shy ones, everyone else in the class will already be doing something embarrassing.
