Team Scoresheet

The idea is to create a cumulative scoresheet that will track teams' points over the course of a term.

Have the JTE split the class into teams of 3-4 students.  The reason for having the JTE do this is because they know the students' English levels.  The teams remain in these teams for the entire term.  Assign each team a name - this could be a color, animal, famous person, etc.  Prior to class, prepare a reasonable size scoresheet that will be permanently hung somewhere in the class.  The sheet might look something like this:

Every English class, teams can earn points by doing virtually anything: answering questions, doing their homework, completing class handouts, winning games, volunteering, etc.  At the end of every class, each team's cumulative score is added to their team's box.

The great thing about this idea is that not all students are outgoing.  Some are shy, not good at English, etc.  However, even these students can do their homework and complete class assignments, which in turn earns them points for their team's score.  I think the trickle-down effect could result in a long-term positive boost to increase these students' confidence, and could quite possibly help bring them out of their shy shell.

One cautionary thing to watch out for is one team getting too far ahead/behind in points.  This could result in the lack of that or other teams' motivation.  So, make sure you are careful, but not blatent, about manipulating the scores the students receive to ensure this problem doesn't happen.

As for the prizes, you could always go out and buy something for the winning team, but the booklet I snagged this idea from recommends something simple like certificates signed by the JTE and ALT.  It said simple acknowledgements about a team's success was enough to keep their motivation going the complete term.

Another idea for prizes is making a stamp/sticker book for all the students.  Then, at the end of the term, an X number of points equals an X number of stamps/stickers each team receives.
