Brief Outline: This is a warmup game to do in class before and during the Winter Olympics.

Materials Needed:

Detailed Explanation:

  1. Sometime before the Winter Olympics, hand out the bingo sheets to the students.  Make sure they understand the vocabulary on the top row of their bingo card: Gold, Silver, etc.
  2. On the bottom section of the bingo sheet, have the students draw a line from the flags to the names of the country. Many of these will be difficult for all grade levels, so let them use their social studies texts or what not.  As a class, check the answers.
  3. This next step can be done in the same class or in the next warmup time.  The second sheet of the attachment has flags.  You will need to copy and give a set of these flags to each student.  Have them choose seven flags and paste them directly onto the left column of their bingo sheet.
  4. During the Olympics bring the medal standings to school. Ask the students if they now know who won what sport, etc.  Get them to fill in their bingo sheet for that day.

Teaching Suggestions:

  • This activity is to be used as a warmup, but over a span of many classes as long as the Olympics are going on.
  • This activity was designed for the 2010 Winter Olympics but it can easily be adapted for any Olympics.
