Brief Outline: Students form sentences about the weather while racing through a monthly calendar board game.

Materials Needed:

• CalendarSlam attachments: GameBoard / Flashcards / GameCards (option 1) / GameCards (option 2)
• Print the game board on A3 paper and laminate or glue it to cardboard
• Print the game cards and laminate them. Every school should have a laminating machine.
• Have some kind of player piece for each student. Character figurines are popular amongst my students. Even magnets found on the chalkboard has proven useful when I've forgotten the player pieces.

Detailed Explanation:

1. Make groups of 4-5 student and play Janken for the order of play.
2. Each group receives a game board and a set of day cards. Additionally, each student receives a game marker.
3. There are five rounds in this game. Each line of the days of the week is one round of play – round one = 1-7, round two = 8-14, etc. For example, if a student draws a ‘Tuesday’ card, they move to the Tuesday square on the first line of numbers (dates 1-7) and try to complete Tuesday’s objective. If the same student’s next card is a ‘Thursday’ card, they move to the ‘Thursday’ square on the second line (dates 8-14).
4. Rules of the game:
   • The game starts by the first student drawing a day card then moving to the corresponding day of the week and saying that day of the week. If they can’t say the day of the week, they miss a turn.
   • Then, if the square has a weather picture; his/her teammates ask them, “How’s the weather?” The student must answer by forming a sentence using the weather in that square. For example, a snow picture would produce an “It’s snowy,” or a similar sentence.
   • However, if a student lands on a batsu square (a question mark square), they must do the batsu game. Batsu means punishment. Prewritten batsu options are written on the chalkboard. The batsu-squared student must decide one of the punishments on the chalkboard and perform it. The ALT/HRT can create any batsu they want, but some suggestions include: singing a Japanese song or English song, jumping 20 times, counting backwards from 20-1, etc. The batsu changes depending on the grade level. A student can receive more than one batsu per game, but they can never choose the same punishment.
   • If the student can form a correct weather sentence, they are safe. Play moves onto the next student. But, if they cannot create a sentence according to the square they landed in, then they go back a week.
   • The winner is the first student to reach the ‘End’ square.

Variations:

• Use a die instead of drawing cards and scratch the five round option. Students progress based upon the number they roll.

Teaching Suggestions:

• Pre-teach the following question/answer pattern: "How’s the weather? It’s ~ ."
• Do a warm-up game beforehand to establish the relationship between the weather and days of the week, like Karuta.

3. ゲームは５ラウンドだ。一週間の曜日の列がそれぞれ１ラウンドになる：ラウンド１は１日から７日まで。ラウンド２は８日から１４日まで。例えば、もし生徒が “Tuesday” のカードを引いたら、最初の週の（曜日1から7までの）“Tuesday”　（火曜日）のところへコマを持って行く。そこで、火曜日という目標を達成することになる。もし同じ生徒が次のカードでまた“Thursday”を取った時は、コマを2週目（曜日8～14）の“Thursday”の所にもっていく。
4. ゲームのルール：
• 最初に生徒が曜日のカードを引いたら、その曜日の所に行って単語を言う。曜日の単語を言えなかったら１回休みとなる。
• もし、カードが天気の絵であれば、同じチームの生徒は “How’s the weather”と聞く。カードを取った生徒は天気について文を作らなければならない。例えば、雪の絵が出れば　“It’s snowy”とか、同じような短い文を作る。
• しかしながら、生徒が罰印の所（？マークの升目）に行ってしまったら、罰ゲームをしなければならない。罰ゲームの種類は黒板にあらかじめ書いておく。罰印の所にいる生徒は黒板上の罰ゲームのうちの一つを選び、それをしなければならない。ALTまたはHRTはどんな罰でも考えることができるが、英語か日本語の歌を歌うとか、２０回ジャンプするとか、２０から１までに逆に数えるなどの案もある。罰は学年によって変える。生徒は１回のゲームあたり１つ以上の罰を受ける可能性があるが、２つ目以降は同じ罰を選ぶことはできない。
• 生徒が天気について正しい文を作れればセーフだ。そして次の生徒が続いてカードを引く。しかし、もし生徒が正しい文を作れない場合は一週間前に戻る。
• 最後の升目（日）に早く到着した生徒が勝ちとなる。

教える際のアドバイス：

• ゲームの前に“How’s the weather”と“It’s ______”という天気の質問と答えの形式を教えます。
•  
  グラフィックアートを使えば曜日の単語は覚えやすいです。
• ゲームをする前に天気と曜日の関係がうまくわかるように、ウォーミングアップをした方がいいでしょう。例えばカルタ取りのように遊んでおぼえます。

バリエーション：

• カードを引いたり、5ラウンド回ったりする代わりに、さいころを使って、出た目の数で進むという方法もあります。
