Brief Outline: This activity teaches students how to make English Christmas cards.

Detailed Explanation:

1. The class brainstorms as many Christmas and winter words as possible.
2. The ALT/HRT writes these ideas on the board (no katakana).
3. Each student is given some construction paper, origami paper/wrapping paper, and markers/coloured pencils.
4. They create their own Christmas cards using various Christmas words that were written on the chalkboard.

Variations:

• For older students, teach them to address the card to someone and write their names in English.  From the 4th grade, students learn how to write their name in romaji.
•  
  All stationary objects are placed on the front desk. Students are only allowed to have one item of stationary at a time.  When a student wants a new item of stationary, they must go to the front desk and ask for it (for example, "pencil please", "here you are," "thank you"). After the dialogue is established, distribute additional stationary amongst students. Then they can ask each other, in English for the things they need.
• Clap the Halls with Katakana Variation: Students clap through various Christmas words in katakana-English versus real English to show help show the differences in pronunciation.
• Show students pictures of shared Christmas words: Christmas tree, Santa Claus, Christmas present, snowball, Christmas card, snowman, etc. Have them clap out the pronunciations in katakana-English, counting them on their fingers as they say them. Then, show them how many syllables the same words have in English. In case you're a little hazy on your syllable counting, a syllable can easily be counted every time you open your mouth.
• Students will very quickly see the difference. The more movement used to reinforce the point the better.
