Grabbing Guess
Submitted byElem ALT team

Outline: Students guess how many objects you have in your hand or a box.

Teaching Suggestions:
  • Use 1-yen coins or marbles – something that can be grabbed easily and enough of them   (enough for the target number set)
  • It’s good to have a small box for the objects.

Procedure:
  1. Split the class into small groups.
  2. Grab a handful of the objects and ask, “How many?”
  3. Give hints: Shake the objects in your hand or show them for an instant.
    4. Have each group makes a guess. The HRT can write their guesses on the board.
    5. After every team has guessed, count out the objects in your hand, one by one and have the students count with you.
    6. Give points for the closest group, and lots of points for an exact guess.

Variations:

  • If a team guesses the correct answer, have everyone in their team play Janken and the winner becomes the new "Grabber."
