Clap the Halls with Katakana

Outline: Students clap through various Christmas words in katakana-English versus real English to show help show the differences in pronunciation.
 
Procedure:
  1. Show students pictures of shared Christmas words: Christmas tree, Santa Claus, Christmas present, snowball, Christmas card, snowman, etc.  Have them clap out the pronunciations in katakana-English, counting them on their fingers as they say them. Then, show them how many syllables the same words have in English.  In case you're a little hazy on your syllable counting, a syllable can easily be counted every time you open your mouth.
  2. Students will very quickly see the difference. The more movement used to reinforce the point, the better.

概要: 生徒はいろいろなクリスマスの言葉を言うことによって、カタカナ英語と本当の英語の発音がどう違うのかを分かりやすく説明します。
 
手順:
  1. 生徒に日本語でも馴染みのあるクリスマスの絵を見せる。例えば、 クリスマスツリーやサンタクロースやクリスマスプレゼントや雪の玉やクリスマスカード、雪だるまなど。生徒はカタカナ英語でクリスマスの言葉を発音して発音の数を手を打ったり、指で数えたりする。その後で、今度は英語の発音をして、同じ言葉が、幾つの音節になるかを教える。もし音節がいくつかはっきりしない場合は、口を開いた時が一拍として簡単に数えることができる。
  2. 生徒にはその違いがすぐ分かるだろう。動きをもっと取り入れることで、違いのポイントを強調すればもっとよい結果が出るだろう。
