Brief Outline: Students help their ‘blind’ partner draw various animals.

 

Materials Needed:

 

Detailed Explanation:

  1. Students make pairs and sit back-to-back.
  2. Give one student in each pair a blank piece of paper, and the other a picture of an animal.
  3. The student with the picture must say, “North, South, East, West, Northeast, Southeast, Southwest, Northwest or stop. The student drawing the picture must follow their partner’s directions and CANNOT lift their pencil off the paper.
  4. After attempting to draw the animal for five minutes, the students switch roles, and a new picture is given to the student who drew first.
  5. There are three pictures in the above attachment. For the fourth round, students make up their own draw their own pictures (secretly) and use those. 

Variations:

  • Instead of using animals, you can use countries, people, maps or regular shapes. Anything is ok, as long as the picture can be drawn.
  • The student who is drawing is blindfolded.
  • In super small classes, do this activity on the chalkboard so everybody can watch.

 

Teaching Suggestions:

  • Students need to be told where to start on each page. Otherwise, they won’t know where to start, and they’ll end up drawing something off the page or making it really small.

 

Tips/Cautions:

  • Slower students might need help. Let a slower student's partner be able to look over the slower student's shoulder to adjust the speed of their instruction, so the slower student can keep up.
