Brief Outline: Students play Japanese dodgeball in a civil manner by destroying each other with polite words.
Detailed Explanation:
Japanese dodgeball is a little different from the usual line-up-on-the-wall-and-wait-to-be-slammed-in-the-face-by-a-ball-thrown-at-death-speeds style of dodgeball you might know from back home. This game can really only be played in a gym. Divide the students into two teams. They already know the boundary lines because it is a standard children's game in Japan.
Each team designates a doctor and the doctor's identity must be shared with the opposing team. An easy way to distinguish the doctor is to have the doctor turn their hat inside-out.
This game uses 1-3 balls. The students must stay within their team's boundary lines.
To start the game, players of each team line up on their respective baselines. Place the balls on the dividing line between the teams. When ALT yells, "GO!" the students run for the balls and the game begins.
The goal is to try and hit the other team's members with the balls. If a student gets hit with the ball, he/she is out. If they are hit on the head, the hit doesn't count. The students' heads are safe areas. If the other team catches a thrown ball they are okay, but if they catch it and drop it immediately, they are out.
This is where the game changes from the Japanese dodgeball rules. The Japanese rules stipulate when the student is hit, they must go to the area surrounding their opponent's boundaries. However, in Doctor Dodgeball, when a student is hit by a ball, they must fall down and call out, "Please help me," The doctor rushes to pull the hurt student back to a preselected safe area. The felled student makes an instant recovery and must say, "Thank you," to the doctor before rejoining play. The doctor responds with "You're welcome!" If the doctor is hit, nothing happens because the doctor is invincible!
This game can go for the entire period or until too many students end up in the doctor's area with injuries.
Variations:
If the doctor is hit three times, they're dead.
If the doctor is hit once, they are immediately dead! The doctor cannot be brought back to life. This makes the doctor a very strategic role in the game, which means they will be the primary focus of the other team. Make sure the student can handle this role.
Instead of using polite language for this game, use body parts. When the student is hit, they will go to the teacher and say which body part hurts. For example, if they get hit on the arm, they will say, "My arm hurts."
