Brief Outline: Students play a doctor/patient game, naming the body part where they are hurt, and bandaging it with toilet paper. Works well with teaching about body parts and feelings.

Detailed Explanation:

1. Bring a roll of toilet paper to class, along with some phrase cards, or write the phrases on the blackboard.
2. Teach various body parts then teach them how to say: “Dr., my ______ hurts,” and “Thank you very much! I feel better!”
3. Have the students lineup in several lines, depending on the class size, and the first student in each line is the doctor. The patients are the next students in line. After the patient has finished being bandaged, they become a doctor and turn around to the student behind them, and the new student becomes the patient.
4. Once the patient says which part of their body hurts, the doctor wraps that part up in toilet paper. Hands and faces might need to be unwrapped for the game to continue.

Variations:

• If you have enough toilet paper and it’s okay to waste some, tell the students to keep the bandages on for the whole game, then at the end, pose for a group picture with the ALT.  Alternatively, if you want to conserve on toilet paper, have the students reuse their bandages.
• Additional phrases about where they hurt, why they hurt, and how they feel can be added/deleted/simplified according to the level of the students.
• For a more complicated system of phrases, several “doctors” can form an HMO and gang-up on a ‘patient’ and ‘team-fix’ them. For example, one doctor asks another doctor for a bandage (the long, roll-type), and assistance with applying it to the patient: Several teams of doctors can simultaneously operate on several patients for different body parts. Then, the patients go to different doctor-team for a different phase and bandage. This way, students can pretend they are stars of their favorite medical drama or cartoon animation.

Teaching Suggestions:

• If there are time constraints, pair the students up instead of forming lines and take turns bandaging each other up.

Tips/Cautions:

• The toilet paper gets everywhere, even if you are sparing in its usage. Tell the students they are responsible for cleaning up their own bandages at the end of the game. Show the students a limit of x-amount of toilet paper to use, and reuse it in class.
• Don’t let the students get away with playing with the toilet paper too much – it should be part of the lesson and not the lesson.
