Brief Outline: Eto (エーット) means umm. When Japanese think out loud, they use this phrase a lot. Students race to recall alphabet letters randomly written on the chalkboard.

 

Detailed Explanation:

  1. Split the class into teams. The unique attribute to this game is any student can answer at any time. The points the students receives goes to their team.
  2. The goal of this game is to remember the letter(s) erased off the chalkboard.
  3. Randomly write the target letters all over the chalkboard and have the students repeat outloud the letters you write.
  4. Once all the letters are written, point to random letters and have the students repeat after you, paying close attention to their pronunciation.
  5. Teach them the two phrases, "Go to sleep" and "Wake up!" To ensure fairness, have the students not only close their eyes but also put their heads down on their desks. See the picture to the right. Once you are confident the students know these phrases, you can start the game.
  6. The game is simple, you tell the students to go to sleep. Once asleep, you THOROUGHLY erase a letter from the chalkboard. It is replaced with a square to help the students narrow their search. Once a student answers correctly, you can either replace the square with the original letter or erase it completely, making the game gradually easier in the following rounds. If you choose the second option, write the erased letter on the side of the chalkboard so the students can reference it in future rounds.
  7. The student who guesses correctly receives a point for their entire team.

 

Variations:

  • Erase two or more letters at a time, increasing the point value with every erased letter.

 

Teaching Suggestions:

  • Have the HRT join in on this game to show the students this game is not about how much English a student knows, versus the ability to remember.
  • While the picture to right shows the entire alphabet being used, for younger students don't hesitate to only use specific target letters.

  6. ゲームは単純だ。生徒に眠るように言う。生徒が眠ったら、黒板に書いた1つの文字を完全に消す。生徒が文字を容易に思い出せるように、その文字を四角で置き換えてあげる。生徒が正しく答えたら、その四角を元の文字に置き換えてやるか、その四角を完全に消す。順を追ってゲームは少しずつ易しくなる。状況により選択して結構が、後のゲームで生徒が参照できるように、黒板の端に消した文字を書いておく。
  7. 正確に思いついた生徒が、自分のチームに１点もらえる。

推薦を教えること：

  • このゲームは一人の生徒がどのくらい英語を知っているかということにではなく、記憶力に関するものであることを示すため、学級担任にこのゲームに参加してもらいます。
