Five-by-Five
Five-by-Five Outline: Teams receive points based upon their ability to answer questions on a 5-by-5 grid. Procedure:
Break the class into teams, and make a table for keeping score on the blackboard.
Make a five-by-five grid using two target word categories on the blackboard, for example, numbers across the top of the grid and colours down the side.
Place the cards in each square of the grid using magnets or tape. On the back of the card, the side facing the chalkboard, the cards have random point values, ranging from 1-10 points.
A few of the cards should have stickers beside the points.
Have a student from one team come to the board and choose a card. Ask everyone on the team, "What's this?" If the team can answer, for example blue 1, they can receive that card's point value, but only after the student explains to their team how many points they are receiving. Teams change and the game continues until all cards have been chosen.
Variations:
Place stickers beside some of the point values on the back of the cards. After the team answers the question, and the card-chosen student explains how many points his/her team CAN win, then the student play Janken with the ALT or HRT. If the student wins, their team receives the points. If the team loses, nothing happens.
Or, you can change the rules so that losing Janken, the team only receives the card's value, but if they beat the teacher in Janken, they can receive double the card's point value.
