Brief Outline: Students practice saying numbers 1-21 in this nail-biting counting game.

 

Detailed Explanation:

  1. Have students make small groups and sit in circles.
  2. Decide who will go first and then go clockwise around the circle.
  3. The first person starts at one. They can say up to three numbers: "1," "1/2" or "1/2/3."
  4. The next person continues in sequence from the number after the last number said by the previous student. Again, they can say one, two, or three numbers.
  5. Continue around the circle until someone is forced to say '21.' That person is then out and the game starts again. The next person in turn should start again at one.
  6. Continue until only one person is remaining.

 

Variations:

  • December Game variation submitted by Anonymous:
    • Before you use this variation, you might need to make 'month' cards for reference purposes in case the students get stuck. You should be able to find some cards somewhere in one of the games in the Months area of the ES site.
    •  
      Go round the class and students say the names of the months in order from January to December. They can choose to say 1-2 months.
    • The poor student who gets December has to stand up and answer two questions: "When is your birthday?" "What is 'gatsu' (month) in English?"
    • For the next round, you can let them say from 1-3 months or even 1-4 or 1-5 later in the game. I usually go round the class once, but one of my classes asked for another game so on the second time we made January the 'batsu' (punishment) word.
    • For round two, try going backwards from December to January.

      This is a good game to slip into the lesson for 5 or so minutes before a longer activity.
    • Also, this variation is best used with small or larger class sizes for a total time of 5-10 minutes.

 

Teaching Suggestions:

  • Word of caution: Younger students have started crying because they are the student that is stuck saying 21. If this happens, you can always change the rules to make the 21-person the winner.

  • (Jan 27, 2012) David said: This is a great game for all grades. For younger grades I changed it to 13 so we could focus on numbers 1-12 and explained that 13 is unlucky in the USA. For the months variation I just made the person after December say Happy New Year! and raise their hands, which is embarrassing enough to be a batsu on its own.
