Not 21!
Submitted byElem ALT team

Outline: Students practice saying numbers 1-21 in this nail-biting counting game.

Teaching Suggestions:
  • Word of caution - younger students have started crying because they are the student that is stuck saying 21.  If this happens, you can always change the rules to make the 21-person the winner.

Procedure:
  1. Have students make small groups and sit in circles.
  2. Decide who will go first and then go clockwise around the circle.
  3. The first person starts at one. They can say up to three numbers. (ie- "1", "1, 2," or "1, 2, 3")
  4. The next person continues in sequence from the number after the last number said by the previous student. Again, they can say one, two, or three numbers.
  5. Continue around the circle until someone is forced to say '21.'  That person is then out and the game starts again. The next person in turn should start again at one.
  6. Continue until only one person is remaining.
