Pin the Shippo
Submitted byJoyce P. Le     Borrowed or inspired from: N/A     Date added: 09-03-07

Outline: Shippo means tail. Students pin the tail on the donkey using directions.

Teaching Suggestions:
  • For upper level students, combine number of steps with directions. For example “go right 4 steps.”
  • For lower level students, use simple direction phrase like “go, stop, left, right, back” instead of “go right 4 steps, go back 2 steps,” etc.
  • Remember to include “go, stop” when teaching directions.
  • Set up the classroom so that students are in the back, blow up a big poster of a donkey without tail and hang it on the blackboard. In between the students and the blackboard lay out a few obstacles (chairs, cones, tables, books, etc.).
  • Instead of using a donkey, consider using a picture of the ALT and have students pin an earring, hat, nose ring, name tag, etc. on the ALT.

Procedure:
  1. Teach students directions and numbers.
  2. Pass out tail worksheet for each student. Have them color and cut the tail.
  3. Depending on the size of the class, divide students into small group so that every student gets to pin the tail within the 30 minutes time frame. Then give each group one blindfold.
  4. Line them up so that the first person is the one being blindfolded first, the 2nd person will be giving direction. When the blindfolded person pins the tail to the donkey, the 2nd person becomes the one being blindfolded and the 3rd person will give direction. There could only be 2 people from each group on the field.
  5. Explain to students that if the direction giver touches the blindfolded student or the blindfolded person runs into any obstacle, they will have to start over again. With the HRT, do a demonstration of how the game works. HRT should be the one blindfolded and ALT should give the directions. The demonstration should what happen when they touch an obstacle and what they need to do to get across the obstacles to pin the tail on the donkey.
  6. Before students begin the game, remind students that they need to tell the blindfolded person to stop whenever necessary to avoid colliding with another blindfolded person or running into an obstacle.
  7. The game continues until every student gets a chance to pin the donkey.
