Playing Your Cards Right
Submitted byElem ALT team

Outline: Students practice saying numbers based upon flipping an unknown card.

Procedure:
  1. Draw arrows on the board to introduce the words "up/down."
  2. Divide the class into teams.
  3. Show students the cards, taking note that they are not in numerical order. Shuffle and place them face down.
  4. Draw the top card from the pack and place it on the chalk shelf on the chalkboard.
  5. The first team decides whether the next number is likely to be higher or lower.  To ensure the students practice saying and recognizing the numbers, before the team can say up/down, they first must say the up-turned card.
  6. If correct, the team keeps guessing while forming a line of cards down the chalk shelf until the team guesses wrong.
  7. When the team’s turn is finished, practice saying the numbers that have been lined up with the entire class.
  8. Award the team points in accordance with the number of cards they have managed to line-up on the board, OR the total card value points.

Variations:

  • This game can be made even more fun if there is a teacher's team, in addition to the students' teams.  When it is the teacher's turn, one of the students plays the role of 'The Card Master.'
