Shingo or Jail
Submitted byElem ALT team

OutlineShingo means stoplight. Students become cars and drive around a designated track following traffic directions.

Procedure:
  1. Use four chairs to make then corners around which the road runs.
  2. Explain the cars must stay on the road and the road is ippo tsuko, one-way.
  3. Then, explain the traffic light colors. You might want to mention the fact Japanese people say 'blue' instead of 'green' light.
  4. Students drive around the track based upon the traffic colors.
  5. If the students don’t stop fast enough on red, they are breaking the law.  Make the HRT the police officer and have them send 'cars' caught breaking the law to keimu sho, prison.  The area inside the track is a good prison area.  Have the law-breakers stay in prison for a certain number of 'red lights' or until another car is caught breaking the law.
  6. At the end of the game, praise the 'cars' with no traffic infractions.

Variations:

  • Change the shape of the track.
