Shinka
Submitted byElem ALT team

OutlineShinka means evolution.  Students meet, greet and play Janken while moving up an evolutionary ladder practicing any target vocabulary.

Teaching Suggestions:
  • Attach distinguishable gestures to each target vocab.
  • Visual aid pictures are recommended to be affixed to the chalkboard to help student remember each rung of the ladder.
  • The evolutionary ladder is usually made up of target vocab words, but some ALTs use a simple ladder (baby, child, father, grandfather, god) and insert the target vocab for the greeting time.
  • When students greet each other, make sure the greet is grade specific.  Meaning, first-graders can handle "hello" or "good morning" phrases but third-graders can handle more difficult greetings, like asking and answering "how are you" questions.  Likewise, sixth-graders might even be able to handle simple sentences, like "I like ~."

Procedure:
  1. Starting at the bottom rung, students walk around the classroom meeting, greeting and playing Janken.
  2. Students can only greet other students of the same level.
  3. A mockup meet/greet for a topic on 'colors' might go something like this:
    • A: Good morning.
    • B: Good morning.  How are you?
    • A: I'm cold.  How are you?
    • B: I'm hungry.  What color? (pointing to a piece of their friend's clothing)
    • A: Red.  What color? (pointing to a different piece of their friend's clothing)
    • B: Blue.
    • <play Janken>
  4.  The winner climbs a rung but the loser stays at the level.

Variations:

  • For a longer version, instead of the loser staying at the same level, make them move down a rung on the ladder.
  • Add a timer to see how many students can finish within a certain time limit.
