Simon Says
Submitted byElem ALT team

Outline: A game in which students perform actions according to the teacher's commands, but only if the command is followed by the phrase, "Simon says."

Procedure:

  1. Teach the target language with the appropriate corresponding gestures.
  2. The ALT says, for example, "Simon says, 'jump,'" so all of the students must jump. Every so often, omit the phrase "Simon says" before the command. In this case, students must not obey the command. Any student who moves at the wrong time or performs the wrong action must sit down.
  3. Play until one or two students are left standing or until it becomes boring.
  4. Practice with the students for a while to make sure understand the rules to the game.  Show them how to respond to the commands. Then start the real game.

Variations:

  • Change 'Simon' to your own name.  Well, unless your real name is Simon.
  • Have the ALT stop performing the actions.  The students must remember the correct actions, unless the ALT does an action to sike out the really good players or the HRT who is usually having about the same amount of fun as the students.
