Homemade Telephone
Submitted byElem ALT team

Outline: Students learn how to make telephones and practice greetings.

Teaching Suggestions:
  • For younger age students, you may want to pierce the cups before class.

Procedure:

  1. After the lesson target has been taught, teach the students how to make telephones.
  2. Each telephone group will have two cups.  Pierce a hole in the bottom of each cup.
  3. Cut a length of string, thread it through both holes, tie a knot and tape it down.
  4. Holding one cup, encourage students to listen into the other cup.  Ask them if they can hear what you are saying as you speak into your cup – this can be a game in itself.
  5. The dialogue could go something like this:
    • Hi Takeshi!
    • Hi Tom!  How are you?
    • I'm good, how are you?
    • I’m great!  Let’s play tennis!
    • Sure!  See you later
    • See you later!
  6. Have the students change partners and repeat the game.  Encouraging them to use different conversations.
