Brief Outline: Students learn how to make telephones and practice greetings.

Detailed Explanation:

  1.  After the lesson target has been taught, teach the students how to make telephones.
  2.
Each telephone group will have two styrofoam cups. Pierce a hole in the bottom of each cup.
  3.
Cut a length of string, thread it through both holes, tie a knot, and tape it down.
  4.
Holding one cup, encourage students to listen into the other cup.  Ask them if they can hear what you are saying as you sp
eak into your cup – this can be a game in itself.
  5. The dialogue could go something like this:
    • Hi Takeshi!
    • Hi Tom!  How are you?
    •
      I'm good, how are you?
    •
      I’m great!  Let’s play tennis!
    •
      Sure!  See you later
    •
      See you later!
    •
Have the students change partners and repeat the game.  Encourage them to use different conversations.

Teaching Suggestions:

  • For younger students, you may want to pierce the cup before class.

    • Hi Takeshi!
    • Hi Tom! How are you?
    • I'm good, how are you?
    • I’m great! Let’s play tennis!
    • Sure, see you later!
    • See you later!
