What's in the Box?
Submitted byRaegina Taylor     Date added: 10-29-07

Outline: Students work in teams to guess a variety of objects or flashcards in a hidden box.

Teaching Suggestions:
  • Preteach grammar ‘Is it _______________?’ ‘It is __________’
  • Preteach ‘What is it?’
  • Preteach adjectives and colours

Procedure:
  1. Students work in teams of 5 students.
  2. ALT gives out a hint as to what the object is. Maybe for the first one, ALT gives more hints.  For example, "it is an animal, it is small. What is it?"
  3. Students in the teams try to guess the objects using the question ‘Is it ________?’. When a student asks a question, the group gets a point (regardless of the answer)
  4. When the student guesses the object, the group gets two points

Variations:

  • Limit the amount of hints the ALT gives
  • Put objects to be guessed on display. When a group guesses the object, other groups should listen, and the first group to get the said object gets a bonus point.

Tips or Cautions:

  • Be aware that one student may always ask the questions. To combat this, get students to janken for an order of speaking and/or running. Also, be sure to not accept the same question twice.
