Where is it?
Submitted byRaegina Taylor     Borrowed from or inspired by: Can't remember     Date added: 02/19/08
Outline:  Students try to guess the location of an object.

Teaching Suggestions:
  • Grammar ‘Is it ~’
  • Grammar ‘Where is the ~?’
  • Revise objects in the classroom with a warm-up

Procedure:
  1. Teach the basic prepositions. Depending on the level of the students you can also throw in ‘to the left of’, ‘to the right of’.
  2. For smaller classes, send students outside. For bigger classes, tell the students to ‘go to sleep’. This means students put their head on the desk and close their eyes.
  3. The ALT or JTE hides the object in the room. Make sure it is somewhere where the students can describe (‘on the TV’ is ok, but ‘in front of the microwave’ may be a bit difficult).
  4. Ask the students to ‘come inside’ or ‘wake-up’. Students try and guess where the object is, by raising their hands.

Variations:

  • Have students work in teams. Students janken for order of play and according to that order is who is asking the question.
  • To make the game easier introduce, ‘close’ or ‘far’ so students can gauge the location. Take away this option to make it more difficult.
  • The student who guesses can place the object in the new place for the next round.
  • Have more than one object that students have to guess.
  • Have a student place the object for the opposing team and then that student is the answer and guide to the opposing group. The first group to find the object wins.

Cautions:

  • Some classes have a range of abilities. It is not uncommon for one student to want to answer all the time. Maybe either do the team option, or get the student to help the teacher in answering the questions.
