Teaching Suggestions

Japanese Substitute Words:

  • Remember it is okay for students to substitute in Japanese words for words they have not learned in English.  For example, "Do you have a hocchikisu (stapler)?"

Importance of Grammar:

  • While grammar is important, it is not AS important in elementary school English, so don't worry whether the students can distinguish between indifinite vs. indefinite articles -- the and a/an.

Only 'Yes':

  • Teach the students to answer questions using, "Yes, I do / No, I do not," rather than a simple, "Yes / No."  However, for younger students (1st and 2nd grade), simplifying responses might be best.
