Brief Outline: Students think about their environment in English by going outside! What’s this madness you speak of?!?! English is not something that is ONLY learned in the classroom. You need to experience it, too. What’s that you say? Entire civilizations operate on this complicated form of communication?
Materials Needed:
- Soto Hunt worksheet (optional): It is used with an activity explained in the "Variations" area.
- A page with each letter of the alphabet written on it – one for every group.
- Optional – a dictionary to reference spelling.
- A pen/pencil – one for every group.
Detailed Explanation:
Prearrange to have the students to meet by the flagpole when class starts.
Divide the class into groups of 2-3 students.
Give each team one copy of the print and then sent them away with instructions to look for “outside things” and to list those things next to their corresponding first letters on the printout. For example, the word ‘sky’ is written next to the letter ‘S’, ‘pond’ next to ‘P’, etc
Then, have the groups search out things around the surrounding area that start with corresponding letters.
After 20 minutes, call them back and compare the lists. The most comprehensive list wins.
Variations:
- Once you have your students outside, you could try using the attachment below. It has six different worksheets. Split the class into six groups and give each group a worksheet. Their objective is to find, collect and bring back everything on their worksheet's list.
Cautions:
- Students are not to go off school grounds.
- The things listed MUST be in the surrounding area. For example, the word ‘textbook’ should not be on the list, unless a student actually brought their textbook outside with them.
