Brief Outline:  Using a Celine Dion love song, students play bingo listening for past tense verbs in the song.

Materials Needed:

  • Celine Dion’s 'Because You Loved Me' song
  • BecauseYouLovedMe bingo sheet (3 x 3 or 4 x 4)

Detailed Explanation:

  1. Students work in pairs or individually.
  2.
    Hand out the bingo sheets.
  3. Write the list of present tense verbs on the board. Then, as a class, change them into the past tense. Practice saying them as a class.  The present tense verbs in this song are:
    • stand
    • love (2x)
    • make
    • touch
    • see (2x)
    • give (2x)
    • is
    • have
    • are (3x)
    • bless
    • lift
  4. Play the song once to allow the students to become familiar with it.
  5. Allow students to choose from the list of past tense verbs and write a verb in each box.
  6. Play the song again, stopping the song after each past tense verb.
  7. When a student crosses out a vertical, horizontal or diagonal line, they yell out, “bingo!”

Variations and Options:

  • For lower level students, use the 3x3 bingo card below.

Tips or Cautions:

  • Be aware of the students' English levels. If the students are high-level, allow them to work individually. If they are low-level students, they might need to work in groups.
