Submitted by: Luke Highstead     Borrowed or inspired from: Simon Widdowson     Date added: 02-18-08     Edited by: Fiona Steele

Brief Outline:  This poetry writing exercise allows students the chance to express themselves via the beautiful language of poetry.

This activity parallels the New Horizon English textbook: unit 3, p30-31.

Materials Needed:

  • BeginnersPoetry worksheet

Preparation Needed:

  • Print one worksheet per student

Detailed Explanation:

  1. Explain this particular style of poetry to the class. You may need the help of your JTE!
  2. Go through the examples in the textbook with the whole class.
  3. Demonstrate how easy this form of poetry is by writing your own original poem on the board.  For example:

    Luke

    Scary gaijin

    Tall, blonde, stupid

    I want my lunch!

    Satisfied

  4. Hand out the worksheet for students to complete. Provide some example topics, such as sports, music, films, hobbies, famous people, friends, themselves etc.

Variations and Options:

  • Collect the worksheets and read them out in class.
  • Type up the best poems and display them on your English Board.
  • Discuss other styles of poetry with the class and attempt them if extra time remains.

Cautions:

  • Set a time limit and provide some sort of incentive for originality.
