Brief Outline:  Students practice lying while saying the months of the year.

 

Materials Needed:

  • Months of the year playing cards. You can buy playing cards at the 100 yen store or use the Bluff! MES-English cards attached below.
  • Each deck should have 4 cards for each calendar month, ie four januarys, four februarys etc.  

Preparation Needed:

  • If you don't use MES's cards, you need to create the cards yourself, laminating if possible.

 

Detailed Explanation:

  1. Remember the old college drinking game, ‘Bulls**t'? In Japan, it’s called ‘Bluff'.
  2. The object of the game is to lay down all of the cards in your hand.
  3. The cards are dealt and play starts by everyone in the group playing janken. The winner starts by laying down 1-4 cards and saying January. The number of the cards played depends on how many ‘January’ cards the student actually has. They have the choice to lie about how many cards they have but if they are caught bluffing, they must pick up the entire pile of discarded cards.
  4. If nobody challenges the play, the next student lays down 1-4 cards and says February.
  5. If any student in the group thinks the student laying down cards is lying, they yell out “You’re bluffing!” If the student is bluffing, they must pick up all of the discarded cards, but if they are actually telling the truth, the student who challenged must pick up all of the cards.
  6. Here’s the kicker: every student must lay down at least 1 card every when it is their turn, so it is inevitable that students are going to be forced to lie.

 

Teaching Suggestions:

  • If you use playing cards, to simplify the prepping procedure, simply take out the kings and jokers so that ‘ace’ = January; ‘jack’ = November; ‘queen’ = December.
  • For bigger classes, split the class into groups of 4-6 students. Each group should have a complete set of game cards.

   

Variations:

  • This game can be practically used for pronunciation practice of any target vocabulary.
  • Keep the kings and jokers in the game and allow them to be 'wild' cards.
  • This game can be used to practice the months of the year with Elementary School students. See below for the Japanese translation.

  • グループ一組ずつ、それぞれ各月ごとに4枚のカードを持ちます。（たとえば、4枚の1月とか、4枚の2月というようにです。） 
     

準備すること：

  • MESカードを使いたくない場合は自分でカードを作ることになりますが、可能ならばラミネートして作りましょう。
     

手順:

  1. 日本ではこのゲームをBLUFF（はったり）といいだが、外国では“Bull S＊＊＊”　（牛の糞）という。
  2. ゲームの目標は手持ちのカードを全部なくすことだ。
  3. カードを分配し、グループ内全員でじゃんけんをしてからゲームを始める。じゃんけんに勝った人は、最大枚数4枚までのカードを1月と言いながらテーブルの上に置く。出されたカードの数は、「1月」のカードを何枚生徒が実際に持っているかによる。カードの枚数は4枚までなら何枚でも持っていると嘘をつけるが、もし嘘がばれた場合は捨てられたカードすべてを引き取らなければならない。
  4. もし、誰も疑わずに”You’re bluffing!”「あなたは嘘をついている！」と挑戦する人がいなければ、次の生徒は「February」と言って１～４枚カードを出す。
  5.  カードを出した生徒が嘘をついているとグループ内のいずれかの生徒が考えたら、”You’re bluffing!”と叫びます。カードを開いてみて生徒が嘘をついているのが分かった場合、それ以前に廃棄されたカードをすべて拾い上げなければならない。しかし、本当だった場合は、挑戦した生徒がカードをすべて拾い上げなければならない。
  6. 生徒ひとりひとりが、順番がきたら最低一枚はカードを出さなければならないので、必ず嘘をつかなければならない破目になる。

 

推薦を教えること:

  • トランプカードを使う場合、手順を簡単にするために、ジョーカーとキングを除いて、ACEは１月、JACKは１１月、QUEENは１２月にするといいでしょう。
  • クラスの人数が多い時は、クラスを分けて４～６人グループを作ります。各グループがゲームに必要な全部のカードを持つようにしましょう。

変形:

  • このゲームは小学校で一年の各月の単語を練習できますが、その他の目標単語の発音練習にも使うことができます。
  • トランプのKINGとJOKERはWILDカードとしてゲームに使うことができます。
