Brief Outline:
Students work in groups to respond to commands from the teacher and formulate appropriate responses.

Detailed Explanation:

  1. Students form groups of 4-5 students, and janken to determine the order in which they will follow the teacher's commands.
  2. ALT/JTE have a list of commands, which students must follow. The game starts with one of the teachers giving a command. For example, “Show a teacher your textbook, please.”
  3. Students should follow the command, but also follow it up. So, for the above example, a student must not only show a teacher their textbook, they must also say something like: “Here you are.”
  4. Any team can receive a point by showing their teacher the completed command (and follow up). The fastest team also receives a point.
  5. List of command examples:
    • Show:
      • a teacher page 47 of your textbook.
      • a teacher a chair.
      • a teacher your notebook, please.
      • a teacher a picture of a dog.
      • a teacher 12 fingers.
      • a teacher a smile.
    • Give:
      • a teacher your pencil case.
      • a teacher seven shoes.
      • a teacher your friend’s desk.
      • a teacher 8 pieces of paper.
    • Tell:
      • a teacher your phone number.
      • Mr./Ms. <JTE's name> a joke in Japanese. The teacher must laugh.
      • a teacher your birthday.
      • a teacher the weather.
      • a teacher what you are going to do at the weekend.

Teaching Suggestions:

  • The ALT/JTE should stand at the back of the classroom when giving commands to make it fair for students who don’t sit at the front.

Variations and Options:

  • Only the first correct group receives a point.
  • The same groups seem to be the groups completing the commands round after round. Give points to the first 3-4 teams who complete the command.
