Brief Outline:  Students form sentences using the present progressive and visual cards.

Materials Needed

  • GodzillaPlaying worksheet, one for each group.
  • One set of cards for each group, also on GodzillaPlaying worksheet.

Preparation Needed:

  • Pre-teach grammar

Detailed Explanation:

  1. Warm-up
    •
Students work in groups to think of as many verbs as possible, without using the textbook. The group with the most verbs wins.
    • Write up the verbs on the board and change them into present progressive.
  2. Activity
    • There are 9 pictures of famous people plus an action for each group. Keep one set for each group at the front of the class.
    • One student comes up and takes the first picture back to their group. They make a sentence describing the scene, using the present progressive, and the next member comes and reports it to the ALT.
    • If they are correct, they get the next card.
    • Game continues until all the cards are gone.

Teaching Suggestions:

  • Good for an introductory lesson, or as a warm-up for a follow-on lesson.

Variations and Options:

  • Students have to write a present progressive sentence, show and read it to the teacher.
  • Students must formulate 2 or 3 sentences about the card, one of which must include a present progressive.

Cautions:

  • Some groups finish quicker than others. Have a worksheet handy for ‘bonus points’.
  • Don't give the groups the cards in the same order!
