Brief Outline:
Students develop their own skit, practicing the grammar and situation of having a guest. Materials Needed:
- Copy of an example script (not included)
- Script worksheet (also, not included)
- (Optional) Props like cups, plates etc to make the activity more realistic
Detailed Explanation:
CLASS ONE
Perform the example dialogue with the JTL, acting out the scenario with props, gestures and movements
Hand a copy out of the script (you will need to make your own script) and students read along as you act it out a second time
Students break into groups of 4-5 and work on developing their own script using the worksheet. NOTE: You will need to make a worksheet for this activity.
Students use the dialogue cues from the example scenario to help them. Students can have a theme for their script, like Halloween, birthday party, Christmas, a date, dinner with friends etc.
Students will need from 30 minutes or the rest of the class to write the script.
CLASS TWO
Give students about 20 minutes to practice their script, encouraging the props, voice and gestures in their practice.
Performance time! Students watch the other groups, try to guess the scenario, getting points for each correctly guessed group Teachers also provide feedback and points on the groups based on voices, gestures and movement, use of props, the quality of script etc.
Give points or awards based on the groups performance.
Variations and Options:
- Make the script a generic one and get students to practice it. This would take only one lesson.
- Record the project and have a lesson with students watching their own performances.
- For more advanced students, get them to completely formulate the script using only the example script as a guideline.
- For lower level students, give them a script with more guidelines, or erase the theme aspect.
Tips or Cautions:
- Students take a long time to formulate scripts. Keep it short by giving them a specific time line to work with. Also the more guidelines you give in the worksheet, the more focused the students will be in completing the activity.
- Students will not pay attention to other student’s performances. Make this a point-based activity. Students receive minus points if they talk through other performances or are rude.
