I Wanna Telephone

Submitted by: Joyce P. Le     Borrowed or inspired from: ALT games     Date added: 01-30-08     Edited by: Fiona Steele

Brief Outline:  Students practice using sub+verb+infinitive sentence while playing this whisper-down-the-alley  style game, でんごうゲーム in Japanese.

Materials Needed:

  • IWannaTelephone handout, for ALT and JTE only.

Detailed Explanation:

  1. Make a list of sentences before class; a list of 20 should suffice.  While the below attachment provides a laundry list of sentences, some suggestions include:
    • I want you to touch your head.
    • I want you to shake hands with the JTE.
    • I want you to draw a house.
    • I want you to say, "hello" to the JTE.
    • The JTE asks you to jump.
    • The ALT asks you to close the door.
    • I need you to say, "I love you."
  2. The ALT/JTE should show do a role play of how to play the game.  The ALT can be the student and JTE can be the teacher or vice versa.  The ALT will be in the back of the classroom giving sentences & the JTE will be in the front receiving the sentences. The last student of each row will go to the ALT and the ALT will say a sentence. Students must remember the sentence and go back to their row. Then, when the ALT shouts, "GO!," students will whisper the sentence to the student in front of them, and so on. The first person in the row DOES NOT whisper the sentence to the JTE, rather they act it out.  For example, if the sentence is, "I want you to touch your head," then the first student needs to touch his/her head to get the point. If the sentence is, "I want you to draw a house," then the first student must run to the chalkboard and draw a house.

Teaching Suggestions:

  • Review verbs with students (to touch, to write, to say, to draw) prior to playing.
    • To touch: students touch the object
    • To write: students write the words on the chalkboard in English
    • To draw: students draw the object on the chalkboard
    • To say: students say the sentence/word/phrase to JTE in English
