Know Your Friend

Submitted by: Joyce P. Le     Borrowed or inspired from: Uncopyrighted TT handbook     Date added: 01-11-08     Edited by: Fiona Steele

Brief Outline:  Students show off their artistic skills and practice speaking.

Materials Needed

  • KnowYourFriend worksheet
  • Profile pictures of schools' teachers or famous people; foreign and Japanese

Detailed Explanation:

  1. Let’s Listen: Show students a few profile pictures of the school’s teachers or famous people. To make it interesting, cut out the eyes and ask students, “Do you know him (her)?” The ALT can choose random students to answer or ask the JTE.
  2. Let’s Draw: Tell students to draw another student in the class - on the KnowYourFriend worksheet - but not to let anyone know who it is. Explain to students that the picture is not a Mona Lisa’s replica; it is only a tool for the exercise. However, encourage students to draw in details (hair length, style, eye glasses, type of clothes, size of eyes/ nose/ mouth…etc).
  3. Let’s Ask your friends: Students will show each other their profile picture and ask each other, “Do you know him/ her?” The respond can be “Yes, I do. He/she is XX.” Or “No, I don’t.”
  4. At the end of class, have students add up the number of 'yes' and 'no' responses.

Variations and Options:

  • Competition: Turn this activity into a competition where students either try to get as many students to guess their picture as possible or vice versa. So the student with either the most “yes” or “no” responses wins the game.
