Submitted by: Joyce P. Le     Borrowed or inspired from: Old games     Date added: 01-31-08     Edited by: Tatyana Safronova

Brief Outline:  Students practice to use sentences that contain gerunds by listening and writing.

Materials Needed

  • Loving The Gerunds worksheet

Teaching Suggestions:

  • If you're teaching a high-level class, the teacher should consider deleting the vocabulary (単語) words.

Detailed Explanation:

  1. Give each student a worksheet.
  2. Listening Exercise: The teacher reads each sentence slowly and the student chooses the correct picture and writes the correct letter next to each number.
    • 1.  Bill loves cooking. (answer = G)
    • 2.  Taking pictures is fun. (answer = A)
    • 3.  Running is difficult. (answer = D)
    • 4.  Mr. K loves watching TV. (answer = H)
    • 5.  Ms. Musashi enjoys using the computer. (answer = L)
    • 6.  I love sleeping. (answer = B)
    • 7.  Swimming is popular in junior high school. (answer = I )
    • 8.  Taro doesn’t like studying. (answer = C)
    • 9.  Walking is fun. (answer = E)
    • 10. Hiroki loves playing the piano everyday. (answer = K)
    • 11. I enjoy riding a bike. (answer = F)
    • 12. Judy likes kicking the ball. (answer = J)
  3. The teacher checks answers by reading the questions again and choosing students to answer.
  4. Writing Exercise: Students make five gerund sentences.

Variations and Options:

  • Competition: Have students work in groups, and the first group to answer the question wins a point. The teacher will read each sentence slowly and one representative from each group will try to be the first to raise his/her hand to answer. The student who says the correct answer (the correct letter) wins a point for the group.
