Monster in the Room

Submitted by: Joyce P. Le    Borrowed or inspired from: ALT games     Date added: 12-18-07

Brief Outline:  Students listen to where the objects are and then connect the dots to find the hidden animal.

Materials Needed:

  • Let'sWrite worksheet
  • Worksheet A&B - Give half of the class worksheet A and half of the class worksheet B.  The Let'sWrite worksheet can be xeroxed onto the back of each of the worksheets.

Teaching Suggestions:

  • Remind students that this is a listening and speaking exercise. They can just put an X or number where they think the object is, without drawing the object or writing the word. The direct location isn’t important as long as the students have a general sense of where it should be. For example, there is an apple on the lamp – the apple doesn’t have to be at the center of the lamp. There is a necktie by the poster – the definition of “by” in this case, would be on the side, whichever side shouldn’t matter as long as it’s “by” the poster.
  • If students are making this activity too complicated for themselves, instruct them to put the X or number close to the word on the worksheet. For example, there is a pencil on the pillow, have them put the X or number near the word “pillow.”
  • Remind students to read the hints in order as they need to connect the Xs/ #s at the end or while they are listening to the hints.

Detailed Explanation:

  1. Give half of the class worksheet A and half of the class worksheet B.
  2. Have students circle the correct word (is / are) for each hint.
  3. Students will take turn giving and receiving hints.
  4. The student who is listening to the hints, will put an X/ number 1~8 where the object should be.
  5. Then student will connect the X/ #s in the order as s/he heard it and then answer the question, “what do you see?” Students can just circle which animal they see.
  6. Have the pairs who have found the hidden animal practice writing (let’s write worksheet). Encourage students to use “outside, in front of, behind, and to the right / left of” if possible.
